One of the challenges to open access biodiversity data in Asia is the lack of technical skills among data holders to mobilize it and make it available. The GBIF Biodiversity Data Mobilization workshop trains data holders in project management, data capture, data management and data publication, with a focus on GBIF's tools and infrastructure.

Participants who successfully complete the workshop receive a badge to certify the skills and expertise they acquire.

The GBIF Asia Support Team is planning to hold a virtual workshop during the week of 7 August 2023 to address capacity needs and to promote data publication in the region. This course will be based on the GBIF Biodiversity Data Mobilization curriculum and will be in English language.

This workshop has three phases of activities:

- 31st July - 4th August preparatory course activities (online self-paced)
- 7th - 11th August virtual workshop (Zoom sessions and online self-paced, 4 hours per day)
- 14th August - 3rd September certification exercises (online self-paced)

While we are keen to satisfy the high interest to this workshop, due to limited training personnel, we will only be able to accommodate 30 participants in this workshop. We hope all participants will become trainers or mentors for future workshops.

If we receive over 30 applications to participate in the training, we will select participants based on the following criteria (not in specific order):

  • Applicants that have already identified dataset(s) that they intend to publish and have cleared licensing requirements;
  • Applicants that represent data holding institutions planning to publish data;
  • Applicants that have plans to hold replication workshops;
  • Applicants that intend to become mentors to support future workshops (advanced badge needed);

The selection process will also consider geographic and thematic balance in the workshop participants.

The application will close at 23:59 UTC on the 7th of July 2023.

The result will be announced by the end of the 14th July 2023.
