    Nóbrega H • Freitas G • Pinheiro de Carvalho M Â

    Description

Beta patula Population Assessment hosts information on plant communities in Madeira Island, Portugal. This archive consists of 3185 vegetation descriptions. The data provides information of a 12 year span vegetation census, from 2014 to 2025 in two uninhabited islets where Beta patula occurs covering Coastal Dry Grassland and Shrubland. This work is part of a EU LIFE Project, LIFE RECOVER NATURA and was conducted by members of the ISOPlexis Genebank Research Group of the University of Madeira.

    Purpose

The LIFE RECOVER NATURA - Beta patula Population Assessment was made to establish a baseline for the creation of a Genetic Reserve for this species. With this work it was also made a vegetation classification, species trend analysis, distribution maps of plant communities and Natura 2000 habitat types for the distribution areas of Beta patula.

    Geographic scope

    Description

The general coverage area comprises two Islets that are part of the Madeira Archipelago, Portugal. The Desembarcadouro Islet is located on the Eastern peninsula of Madeira island (Ponta de São Lourenço) and the Chão Islet, which is one of the three islets that compose the Desertas Islands.

    Taxonomic scope

    Description

The Taxonomic coverage consists of vascular plants occurring at Desembarcadouro and Chão Islets in Madeira Archipelago, Portugal.

    Coverage
    Plantae
    Tracheophyta
    MagnoliopsidaLiliopsida
    Asparagales

    Methodology

    Sampling

The collection of floristic data was conducted the following way:
At a sampling site comprising of 16 square meters, it was created a grid of 16 individual 1 square meters. Four of these areas were randomly chosen using a randomizer software.

    Study extent

Sampling was carried out in the distribution areas of Beta patula at the Desembarcador and Chão Islets in Madeira Archipelago. The sampling period was between 2014 and 2018, covereing a five year span of dataduring the project's duration. The sampling frequency was yearly, always during spring. For Desembarcador Islet 12 permanent sampling sites were chosen. For Chão Islet 3 permanent sampling sites were created. These sampling sites have an area of 16 square meters.
From 2019 onwards the projecct continues in the Pós-LIFE format, using the same methodology as previously.

    Quality control

A count of all the plants present in the grids was made by two trained technicians. All data gathered was validated accordding to the Bibliography given to each event record.
All areas were GPS referenced with a 3 meter standard error, giving all sampling events the lowest distribution error, thus increasing location precision. All data was registered in the occurrence dataset has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data. This dataset contains 2369 records.
