    The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is a public institution whose substantive tasks are teaching, research, and the dissemination of culture. It is currently the largest and most important university in Mexico and Latin America and is recognized in the academic world as a university of excellence. UNAM has 27 museums open to the public, as well as galleries and collections of many types, and preserves museum spaces such as botanical gardens, planetariums, observatories and other facilities for the promotion of science and culture. One of UNAM's strengths is the National Biodiversity Pavilion, which houses four national biological collections (fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals) consisting of about 130,000 specimens in total, documenting Mexican biodiversity and other parts of the world. The National Collections make available to the qualified scientific community museum specimens from Mexico and adjacent regions, in optimal state of conservation and with the appropriate standard of care, including databases available on the Internet with information associated with the specimens.
