Macroalgae from Rocky reefs of Yucatan
Description
from the Yucatan offshore: Bajos de Diez, Sisal; Progreso; Chicxulub, Telchac and
Dzilam,. Sampling was conducted using self-contained underwater breathing
apparatus (SCUBA). at two different seasons (Dry and Rainy) except for Bajos de
Diez that could be collected only for dry season. All samples obtained were
identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and added to the Algae
section of the Herbarium of the University Autonomous of Yucatan (UADY).

Methodology
- Sampling
Benthic surveys were conducted seasonally to capture temporal variability, with sampling during the rainy season (July–September 2023) and dry season (May–June 2024). Benthic sampling was conducted via SCUBA diving, employing four transects (20 m) at each site. Surveys of reefs involve examining 25 plots measuring 25 x 25 cm per site, with plot selection randomized within our designated study areas. Each plot was photographed using an underwater camera (Olympus Tough TG-7 OM SYSTEM) for subsequent analysis. At each site, the geographic coordinates of each sampling site were physically located using a Garmin© GPS (Global Positioning System) with an accuracy of ± 4 meters. Macroalgae were collected, and in the case of specimens adhering to rocks, a spatula or knife was used. The organisms were placed in sealed bags with seawater at each sampling site and station. Each sample is associated with collecting information recorded in the field in the form of a label containing the following information: Identification of the material at the highest possible taxonomic level in the field location (with geographic coordinates). Depth, Type of substrate or environment, Date and time of collection, Collector's name, Collection code, Photograph code, Collection method used.
